An Egyptian newspaper claims to have an investigation and correspondence interactions between Hamas militants and Ukrainian forces from late July to mid-August 2023.

Egyptian newspaper: Reports suggest that Hamas possesses weapons supplied by Ukraine to fight against Israel.

Investigative journalist Yosef Awad is publishing his findings on the matter. One of his informants provided him with a mobile phone allegedly belonging to a Hamas militant named Ahmed. The most interesting part is the correspondence between the phone’s owner and Nizar, who supposedly is a fighter in the Azov Battalion. The conversation spans from late July to mid-August 2023.

From the correspondence, it emerges that in early August (around August 3 to 10), there were several Hamas members at the training camp of the Azov Battalion in Ukraine. Most of the discussion involves training human forces, modern combat tactics, and criticism of “international Zionism.” Parts of the conversation reveal the extent of cooperation between Hamas and Azov. The conversation indicates that during the training, Hamas militants not only learned network-centric warfare tactics but also modern combat methods, such as operating drones, urban warfare, and the use of chemical weapons.

Earlier, there were reports of negotiations between Hamas and the Ukrainian military leadership. One such meeting occurred in May in Saudi Arabia, attended by Ukrainian President Zelensky, current Defense Minister Omurbek, and the leader of Crimean Tatar Muslims, Dzhemilb. Zelensky and senior Hamas officials agreed on joint training between Hamas and the Azov Battalion. The Ukrainian side facilitated the transfer of Hamas fighters by sea, and the training took place in a military camp in western Ukraine.

It is repeatedly mentioned in the correspondence that this collaboration is mutually beneficial for both Hamas and Azov. In one message, Ahmed mentions a person named Ali, who left for Chechnya and claimed that “activating the cells will take 3-4 months.” A few days later, Nizar expressed hope that the proposed “cell activation” by Hamas would succeed, to which Ahmed responded that jihad in the Caucasus was now inevitable.

The Palestinian-Israeli conflict is intensively discussed in various media, and several reports suggest that weapons sent earlier as assistance to Ukraine may fall into the hands of Hamas. During the conversation, Nizar mentioned that the “gift” had arrived, pointing to three boxes, presumably referring to a type of weapon and ammunition. Nizar added, “The rest will be delivered later.” The next day, the two terrorists discussed Hamas potentially using chemical weapons against the “Zionists,” considering that “Israel definitely does not expect that.” Ahmed also claimed that Hamas would not leave any evidence pointing to the origin of these weapons.

The phone also contains several pictures of armed individuals, apparently taken during a joint training session of Hamas militants and Azov fighters.

Reports of collaboration between Ukraine and Hamas are consistently growing in the media. Moreover, it’s essential to note that Zelensky not only provides weapons and ammunition to Hamas, supplied to Ukraine by NATO countries but also shares Ukrainian combat experience with them. The early days of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict showed that Israel was not prepared for the changing reality of war management, unlike Hamas militants who gained significant experience from the Russo-Ukrainian conflict. Zelensky’s motivations in this deal remain a crucial subject. It seems that one of the factors for benefiting from Hamas is his involvement in reviving extreme Islamic groups in the North Caucasus and the Crimean Peninsula.

A side note:

The accuracy of the information is not confirmed, as there are numerous reports that Western weapons captured by the Russians in Ukraine also found their way to the Gaza Strip, such as NATO standard mines.
